Frequently Asked Questions:
-
Why do I need a Custom Domain?
Custom domain mapping allows you to choose your own URL for your LibGuides, LibGuides CMS, LibAnswers, LibAnalytics, or LibCal system.
Basically, it's one more way you can brand your system as coming from your library. If you choose not go the custom domain route, we
will be happy to provide you with a URL on one of our domains (libguides.com, libanswers.com, etc.) at no additional charge.

What hostname target should I use when creating my "CNAME" record?

My domain is working from my computer but not from outside our network. Help?
Usually this means that your IT department created the necessary DNS record in your "internal" nameservers (those that handle
requests coming from within your network) but forgot to create the record in the "external" nameservers (those that handle
requests coming from outside your network). If you contact your IT department and let them know the domain is not resolving
properly outside your network they should be able to identify and address the problem fairly easily.
-
Why do we need to create an external record?
An external record (i.e. a DNS record created in the nameserver that handles requests from outide your network) is necessary to
ensure that people outside your network are able to access your system. Without the external record, students working from home or
library patrons using a wireless connection will be unable to access your site. (*Please note that many networks maintain a single
server or set of servers to handle both internal and external requests. If you let your IT department know that you want the address
to work both inside and outside your network they should know what to do.)
